This event takes place on 16th October 2021 from 2:10pm to 4:50pm and will take place at Zoom. It is a Guild event being organised by Liz Jarvis, .
Gary says he was born sewing, he just cannot remember not doing textiles, from the moment he could hold a pair of scissors he was cutting into scraps of cloth to make something. His career has taken him on a fantastic journey from an early start as a freelance fashion designer, then to an extensive time spent in the world of academia, becoming Head of Fashion, Textiles and Surface Design for University Centre Somerset.
In 2017 he made the bold decision to once again “go solo” and came out of the main stream education system to pursue his passion in exploring his own practice and style.
Gary says, “I now have the clarity and time to pursue and expand my own practice development from designer to artist; I personally find the two areas of the creative spectrum merge and separate as I travel along this journey. For some time now, I am drawn to the National Park of Exmoor, exploring imagery and inspiration from this environment which often appears in my work”
Examples of processes explored in Gary’s work are thus far in 2D work which include applique, paint, print, machine embroidery and hand stitch. He also returns to his formal training in fashion and pattern cutting with 3D forms in garments for the body but also producing more playful examples in morphed human / animal figures in his extensive portfolio of work.
Gary now continues that journey, breaking out into the public domain with his infectious enthusiasm delivering online teaching which is fun and achievable, holding live private creative retreats plus classes and workshops across the UK and beyond. Currently he is a featured tutor for West Country Embroiderers and and Creative Textiles Tutor for Crafty Monkies and has worked extensively with the Embroiderers Guild.
