About Region 5

Welcome to Region 5.  Our region covers Gloucestershire, Bristol and Somerset.  The M5 from junction 5 to 25 (Tewkesbury to Taunton) is the spine to our area and there are 51 quilt groups on our Region 5 list – 10 in the Bristol area and 21 in Somerset and 20 in Gloucestershire. For a full list of groups click here

Being a large area geographically we try to have our meetings in a variety of places, though many are within easy reach of the M5.  We aim to rotate the regional days from Gloucestershire, to Bristol area to Somerset.  Each year we plan to have 2 regional days where there are 2 speakers or where members share a particular skill or do a mini-workshop.   Regional days in 2020 have been put on hold due to COVID-19.  We are working on getting face to face back for 2021 and setting up some virtual days during the remainder of 2020.  Our events usually have traders and there is always the popular show and tell session.  The regional days have a raffle. We also have a book stall with magazines and quilt sales.  If lunch is not provided then bring your own and we provide tasty cakes with a cup of tea before you leave for home.

To support the Quilt Show taking place at The American Museum, Bath, in 2019 we supported a number of sewing bees at the venue.  We are also holding a number of coffee mornings around the region so check out a quilt shop near you to see if we will be there.

In Region 5 we do our best to support the Young Quilters group and we have experimented with having YQ events associated with our regional days.  Unfortunately we do not have a Young Quilters Rep at the moment and would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved.  For more details contact reg5@quiltersguild.org.uk or go to the Region 5 page on the YQ website

Check out the events pages to find out what is happening in the region - shows, talks, workshops etc.  The News pages have lots of items about quilting in our region.  If you have an event or a news item you want added to the website please send to the website editor

Quilting Workshop Saturday 14th November 2020 - 10.00 to @ 13.00 via Zoom

Rudolph the Reindeer

Appliqué and Free-motion Embroidery Workshop

with Gary Mills BA (Hons)

Cost Guild Members: £15
Non Members: £22.50

Places for non members will only be available after 7th November as we hope this will prove popular with our members.

Join in a festive themed online class to embroider this adorable ‘Rudolph’ appliqué reindeer in a 3-hour workshop. Take part in this zoom workshop with tutor Gary Mills, for a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn, he will demonstrate and guide you through this Christmas version of his popular, “Draw, Stitch and Paint” workshop.

Tailored for everyone, from the beginner to those more experienced. You will learn the skilful art of firstly transferring the image, then how to use heat transfer bonded adhesive for appliqué of fabrics. Using free motion machine embroidery, it is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand tinting with colour watercolour paints to finish off your outcome. This class is full of little cheats and how-to tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing machine.

The outcome could be a Christmas decorate wall hanging, would make a great panel for a festive quilt, or even a cushion centre, Gary will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop.

Once booked you will be sent the PDF of the image and a instruction sheet to support the session to print off, along with a materials list of readily found fabrics and equipment.

Just 20 places available – please use booking form and return by post or email
